Neighborhood Priority
(A Pedestrian-First Elm Street)
The City has previously floated proposals to make Elm Street from Day Street to Grove Street or Russell Street a pedestrian-first space, replacing the current chaotic traffic with tables and trees.
The DSNC Elmway Action Group is working to identify which proposed changes apppeal most and work best for the people who live and work here, and enable us to push the City for those improvements as neighbors.
In February 2026, the Elmway Action Group expressed support for quick-build safety improvements to Elm Street between Day Street and Grove Street in the short term, as we continue refining the long-term plan.ย This proposal would NOT restrict automobile access to Elm St.
In spring 2026, the action group discussed the proposal at DSNC meetings and in-person and online open houses, and collected 50 neighbors' signatures.ย We also met with the Pedestrian & Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC) and talked informally with Somerville Mobility Division staff and the Mayor's office.
Next, we are seeking a formal meeting with the Somerville Mobility Division this winter.
We also want to drafting a proposal for more quick-to-build improvements, like signage to help drivers find parking lots.ย If you want to help with that, please reach out!
The committee is discussing a variety of longer-term proposals for Elm Street and the Davis Square Commercial Area, which could include:
Regular โopen streetsโ days on Elm Street
Planting additional trees on and around Elm Street
Adding raised crossings, intersections, or blocks on Elm Street
Adding modal filters to Elm Street at Day Street
Partially or fully pedestrianizing Elm Street between Day Street and Russell Street
Partially or fully pedestrianizing the small triangular parking lot by the corner of Elm Street & Summer Street
Partially or fully pedestrianizing Dover Street between Holland Street and Meacham Road
Partially or fully pedestrianizing Summer Street between Grove Street and Cutter Avenue
Making Highland Avenue 2-way between College Avenue and Cutter Avenue
Making Day Street 2-way for some amount west of Elm Street
Changing traffic patterns on Meacham Road
Changing traffic patterns on Orchard Street
Relocating parking around the Davis Square Commercial Area
Changing bus routes through the Davis Square Commercial Area
and more!
This will require collaboration with the many groups it will affect, including residents, the Davis Square Merchants Association, Somerville Mobility and Engineering divisions, emergency services, Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee (SBAC) and Pedestrian & Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC), and MBTA.ย We can only reach the best design by involving the diverse perspectives in Davis Square.ย Please join the conversation!
